You remove the voltage regulator and bend back a terminal on the regulator
and solder a wire to it. You then connect this wire to a terminal on the
isolator. (The isolator is simply a pair of high-current diodes that allow
current to flow from the alternator to each battery but not from battery to
battery.) Diodes typically have a voltage drop of 0.7 or more volts. The
modification allows the voltage regulator to regulate the voltage after the
diode drop so you get a regulated 13.8v at the battery. The voltage at the
alternator will be 14.5 or so volts.
