A couple of days ago I tested New Beetle 1.8t. One of the safety features the salesman pointed out was that VW uses a special material on the underside of the hood. Of course it is a sound and heat insulator, but also if the temp in the engine compartment gets too hot (as in fire), then the material melts off the hood and drops onto the engine to help smother the fire. I wonder if this material could be adapted to our engine covers. The NB 1.8t, by the way, is one quick beetle.
