The gearbox cover is srewed on to the gearbox with about half a dozen screws. It's save to unscrew them and to remove the lid. Then you can see the motor axle disapearing in some rubber like thingie which acts as an elastic coupling. Remove the two bolts which connect motor and gearbox, and then carefully, gently, but nevertheless with plenty of force pull the motor axle out of the rubber. It helps pulling the motor with one hand and at the same time holding back the rubber thingy with an open wrench or similar tool. Oh, I forgot: this all applies to the window regulator assembly already being removed from out of the door and sitting on your work bench ... If your current problem is getting the thing out of the door, drop me a line, I can remail you a posting to the Vanagon list which covers exactly that. Or you could try the archives ...
