Another thought would be to take Highway 89 all the way from Lake Almanor south to 395, I believe it hits somewhere around Topaz. You would miss the beautiful Carson Valley part of 395 but in exchange you stay in the mountains and cruise by the west shore of Tahoe.

Just a thought....
