Took the Westy out for a short hop in 90 degree southern heat today. A/C on number 3 fan position, and the passengers (my wife and baby) were cool, but I was sweating. Horrible.

Decided to have a look-see at the situation this afternoon. First, to find the receiver/drier and look through the sight glass, I thought to myself. Motor running, no can find sight glass. Follow the hoses from the compressor, to . . . hmmm. Must be underneath somethin'. To Vanagon manual, there it is apparently above the left rear wheel well. Thermometer in the vent shows about 70 degrees. Not too good. Reminds me of my hapless Dometic (Mark, where are you when I need a Dometic repair??) The trusty Dometic is showing a balmy 80 degrees. Not bad for warm desserts, I guess. But I digress . . .

It occurs maybe we should inspect the evaporator in the rear of the vehicle. I gingerly prise back the wood trim piece. Lo and behold, the evaporator is 40 to 50 percent covered with a thick heavy dust deeply recessed in the cooling fins! Now that can't help performance.

Fixin' to carefully brush and vacuum that junk out of there and see if it makes a noticeable difference.

Will report later. Film at eleven.

Thought for the day:

"If only Ken Wilfy was franchised nationally . . ."

BTW Ken, my money order is coming someday -- wish you had Visa!
