Joe,

I switched to Syntec with 162k on the clock with no problems. I took the precaution on using Amsoil Engine Flush before switching to Syntec. The Amsoil product is pricy compared to the cheap flushes sold by the FLAPS but it is very effective. It is the only flush that could quiet a noisy lifter on an 86 Audi 4000CS Quattro.

If your Westy has been properly maintained you should not have problems. All engines manufactured since 1980 have seals compatible with synthetic lubricants.

BTW I had excellent results using 5W-50 Syntec in my 69 Westy with an ATK rebuild for you air-cooled folks. I ran the rebuild on Castrol 10W-30 dino oil for the first 5k break-in miles and saw no oil consumption after switching to Syntec up until I sold it 50k miles later.

I am still amazed at how oil-tight that 1600cc engine was even when run in summertime Mojave desert heat. I guess it was a combination of Syntec's low volatility and a good European rebuild.

Bill 83.5 Westy, waiting on a good used ECU!
