Most primers (with the exception of the so-called "primer-sealer" and
catalyzed primers) have pretty much no resistance to moisture.  Leaving
them uncovered is an invitation to rust.  I learned this the hard way.
Primer-sealer is only incrementally better.  The catalyzed primer seems
almost as good as a paint -- I've had it exposed for more than a year
now, but it's a pain to work with unless you own a compressor
and paint gun.  The best advice I've heard is to simply paint the primered
areas with some cheap paint, and then when you're ready to get serious,
sand it off and go.
