I read some vague comment in the manual that seemed to imply I didn't need the magnetic pickup, however I read this when trouble shooting my first failed test drive and I already had the pickup installed. Plus, I'm pretty sure it is necessary. The unit does sense engine speed (RPM) from the coil, but engine speed is different than van speed. Even though the van is manual transmission, I don't *think* there is a straight multiplier between RPM and MPH. Going up and down a hill is still going to be a bit different - espically down a steep hill where your essentially coasting instead of using the engine. Perhaps I will try disconnecting the magnet just to see what happens.

Thanks for your other info.

Eric
