The tool to remove the seal is only a few bucks and probably worth it.

The first time I removed the seal I used a very small claw hammer I happened to have around. I put a small piece of wood on the face of the crank, slipped the claw end of the hammer under the seal, and levered the seal right out. I was never able to get enough leverage with any screwdriver I had.

I think the seal for the trans can only be removed with the shaft removed.
