It also divides the case into differential section (with the drain plug stuck on the bellhousing) and the gear section (with the fill plug up on the side). I believe that there are enough/big holes to allow the oil to drain adequately but would have some structural concerns for bearing support should you go wacky with a drill. Besides, its way easier to drive the Van up on some ramps to get the nose in the air for better draining and to drill into a trans case! One other thing to consider. Try opening the fill plug first before draining the oil. The weight of the oil and the air rushing through that large external hole might be enough to force a couple more oz. of the old stuff out.
