Subject: FS: '90 Westy $10,500 in Pa.

I have a silver, 4-speed '90 Westfalia camper for sale for $10,500. It is a
full poptop camper with all interior items (tables, screens, sink, stove,
etc.) intact. In fact it appears that the camper cooking facilities have
never even been used. I say this because the metal lid over the stove still
has the protective plastic sheeting over it that was there from the factory.
The camper belonged to a customer of the same VW specialist who does all the
work on my own Westy (and is by far the best Vanagon specialist in the
area). After having it inspected and getting a ton of nickel-and-dime stuff
done to it (exhaust work, major tune up, air conditioning recharge, etc.
etc. totaling close to $1000), the owner mentioned that he was thinking of
selling it. Feeling that it was in excellent mechanical shape and well
worth grabbing, the garage was nice enough to call me and let me know. So I
bought it based on their recommendation.
Mechanically, the van has 133k on it and, according to the VW garage that
just thoroughly inspected it, needs absolutely nothing. It runs great. The
original owner bought it in New Mexico and kept it there until about 115k
miles, when he sold it to the second owner who brought it to Pa. All of the
original paperwork is still in the glovebox, down to and including the
original dealer window sticker and the warranty card for the propane tank.
I do not know the repair history of the vehicle, other than a handful of
receipts in the glovebox for a clutch job at about 115k and various
maintenance type items. I do know that the van has none of the typical head
gasket or steering rack leaks - everything's dry.
Interior wise there are basically no rips or other interior damage. There
are a number of spill stains on the carpet and seat bottoms, though. The
owner was elderly and it looks like he didnt make much (or any!) effort to
clean up spills etc. that occured when driving. (On the other hand, he
thought nothing of okaying $1000 worth of service that the local VW garage
recommended, hence the clean mechanical bill of health.) I will thoroughly
clean it this weekend and expect most of them to come right out, leaving the
interior in very good to excellent condition.
Body wise, there is no rust (not even seam rust) and only a tiny ding on the
lower right wheel well lip. Even the flaps that cover the camper inlets are
still intact. However, there are a multitude of small scratches and swirl
marks in the paint, as though someone washed it once with something way too
abrasive. Not all the way through the paint, looks fine upon casual
inspection but definately noticable if you look at it up close. If you're
picky you'd definately want to see about compounding it or whatever, but
from a couple feet away it looks fine.
I'm pricing it significantly below book value in order to sell it quickly.
I'm in the Philadelphia/Reading/Allentown area. I should mention that
technically, since I am a parts shop and not a car dealer, this van is sold
by me privately and not by The Bus Depot Inc. I will also add that
particularly at this price, it is an as-is sale (although it does have a
brand new state inspection and you're also more than welcome to speak to the
garage that serviced it for feedback on its mechanical condition), but I
will provide any parts you decide you need for it at my wholesale cost for
30 days after purchase. Frankly, though, I don't think you'll find you need
any parts, as it's completely ready to drive just as it stands.
