I used to have a gear shift rattle until about a month ago. I used to tuck the gear nob behind my left knee (UK remember) while doing any sort of speed. I took the whole gear shaft off and changed the rubber bush located above the fuel tank. (The tank was off for de-rusting anyway) I also replaced the bolt that joins the bottom of the shift lever and the rod. The plastic bushes were OK but the bolt had grooves worn into it. I think this was the source of the noise. Now I have a much better feel to the gear shifting and NO rattles. Martin 82 Transporter
