Subject: SA 5-speed transmission question
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Is the 5-speed transmission used in the South African vans the same as the 5-speed used in the diesel Vanagons, abet with different gearsets?

The reason I am asking is, I figured that if this is so, I could use the front transmission mount, and the gearshift and front shift mechanism-housing from a 5-speed diesel Vanagon when upgrading from the standard 4-speed to a South African 5-speed.

(I'm told that the 5-speed requires a different front transmission mount, and from what I can tell in the shop manual, the front shift-mechinism housing is the part of the shift linkage that contains the detents for the shifter. (This would eliminate the need to push down for 1st gear like reverse.)

Opinions?
