I'd be careful about slamming JCW.

Their quality, selection and service have all skyrocketed since moving to La Salle. They aren't the type to sell "a used starter with fresh black paint". If you have any questions about a part, the telephone jockey's will typically track down an answer for you.

Wanna know how and where those starters are rebuilt? Ask 'em.

JCW is a good group, in my eyes.

You get what you pay for! In this case it is probably a "rebuilt" that is a used starter with fresh black paint.

There is a good Bosch factory certified rebuilder in Seattle that charged me about $100 each for both a starter and alternator rebuild, and he does it right. Check with Bob at Precision Electric, 425-486-5400. He rebuilds primarily for the trade, but will work with anyone who finds him. I have used his services for over 10 years on my MGBs too.
