Cheers to all: My experience for the last three years have been the contrary. My '84 Westfalia would not start after two or more hours of driving, so I had to roll started her all the time, reverse, 2nd and all. Last year I had the transmission repaired (167K miles) because of a dented planetary pinion. My mechanic (the guy who lets me drive my van when he doesn't have her) told me that the damage was not from the rolling but a common problem with this trans.

After repairing, I had to use that starting technique a few times, until finally was convinced of installing an additional piggy back solenoid (done in march). No mo' problems, after that, starts fine.
