Idont know about the Vanagon / type 4 engine, but I checked the Type 3 Haynes. The Type 3 has a Magnesium/Aluminum case, and it uses an engine carrier setup too, just like the buses. There are both M8 and M10 bolts on the carrier on the Type 3, and these are the specs for this engine: M8 28 lbft, M10 46 lbft. This probably adds more confusion than solve the problem, but still.....
