I too am a rank amateur, but have read a lot and also have the video on spray painting that the Auto Body Store sells (got this site from the list awhile back: http://autobodystore.com).

I use an epoxy primer from PPG, the video recommends either this or etching, which I have not used. Catalyzed is probably the same, but check with your supplier.
