I had the same concern about those holes which I also noticed on my E-code
lamps. According to the shop from which I bought the lights, these are for heat
and moisture dissipation.

|I recently bought a set of hi/low beam E-Code Headlights from David
|Marshall. As I understand it, these are the Hella E-Code Headlights that
|came stock on the later year vanagons (rectangular headlights) in Europe.
|The rubber boots that cover the H-4 bulb and hole were a problem for David
|to get. They took a lot longer to get and were ordered separately from the
|headlights themselves. But looking closely at how the boots fit, it appears
|that they do not completely seal the back of the headlight. I asked David if
|this was right and he thinks that these are the correct boots. I'm not so
|sure so I am asking the list. (This is not a complaint against David. I feel
|that he put in a lot of work and patience to secure a difficult item to get.
|But none of us knows everything, and I just want to make sure I'm getting
|the right boots.) So here is a description of the problem as I see it:

|On the back of the boots is the following: (Hella Logo), "9GH 116 966-01
|GRAU f. H4-Lampe, 9GH 116 966-00 SCHWARTZ f.A-Lampe".

|The problem I see is that on the back of the headlight reflector there is a
|silver donut shaped ring. The H-4 bulbs fit into the hole in the back of
|this ring. The boots fit snuggly to the back of the bulb and to the outside
|of the silver ring. But they only go about halfway up on the length of the
|silver ring and do not cover three rectangular holes in the ring. With the
|boots mounted I can blow air through these rectangular holes into the
|headlight. This doesn't seem right to me. It seems to me that water and
|moisture will enter the headlight and cause problems.
