Pulled a Vanagon engine in a U-pull-it not too long ago where they don't allow any jacks, etc. and they only have these really heavy and hard to move engine hoists. With myself and a friend we used stacked up tires under the motor and prying up against the tranny with the already messed up front bumper of the van (chrome). You would just pry up a bit and pull out a tire and let her down, then repeat this three more times until the engine is sitting on a rug (that we got from the van interior). Then undo the tranny mount and lower it down slowly using the bumper as a bar. Then we just pulled on the rug and it came right out from under the van, nice and neat. Of course it is much nicer to use real tools when you can (which is what I normally do of course) but it is nice to know how to do "emergency" repairs with minimal tools if you needed to.
