I had this same problem occur 6 years ago in my 91 vanagon while in traffic with 4 kids aboard. I let the VW product liason know in person, when I happened to meet with him on another matter. I'd rather have seen a recall on this instead of that air conditioner duct recall. And yes the duct fell too..
