Sounds like a belt gone on the takeup pulley. You could possibly (gently) rip it apart, remove the offending belt and take it to Radio Shack for a replacement.

What happens is the cassette mechanism senses that the takeup pulley has stopped, assumes the tape is at the end & tries to flip over the mechanism to play from the other side. The same happens on the other side & the tape mechanism spends all day flipping over the tape ....

Aaaaagghh!!! DON'T do the WD-40 thing!! You'll destroy your stereo. I guarantee it.
