Subject: 84 Westy ECU woes & JC Whitney
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;

My mechanic says the ECU is dead in my 84 1.9L wasserboxer. Prices in my part of the world (east coast of Canada) range from $500 Can up to $1900 Can from the dealer. He knows I can't pay that kind of money.

So I spent the better part of last night cruising the archives for possible alternatives. I found several but the most intriging one is the following:

J.C. Whitney SKU# 13ZX4336R Electonic Ignition Control Module "Replaces original perfectly. For VW with electronic ignition including 84-85 Vanagon 1.9L" $39.95 USD

I called them this aft and spoke to someone in their tech support department. It seems that they cannot cross reference their sku to the proper VW or Bosch part number. Jeez, seemed like a reasonable question to me.

So, has anyone tried this as an ECU replacement for their Digijet fueled 84?

(we're pretty sure it's the ECU thats kaput because the mechanic swapped one from another 84 that he was working on and the my van ran beautifully. Put my old one back in and it didn't run period.)

All insight and advice appreciated.
