Hi Doug,

CHANGE YOUR OIL. Use 20w-50 regular or synthetic 20w-50 or 5w-50. The synthetic is more costly, but superior in terms of lubrication, especially at start up, when much oil-related wear normally occurs. I figure, even $4/quart is a lot cheaper than engine repairs.

Be sure to use a regulation VW filter, never Fram or similar. Even some Bosch branded filters are not German made. Mahle or Knecht (spelling?) branded filters (available from List vendors) are fine.
