The AAR lets air into the air distribution box when it's cold and no air into the air distribution box when it's warm. So, let it get down to "cool" (maybe around 50-60 degrees) and you should be able to blow through it easily. Warm it up to "hot" and you should not be able to blow through it. Sounds like yours is working OK.

When you did your test and it didn't work as expected, it may have been because of

1) You waited too long and the AAR was already warmed up (and closed), or

2) you didn't pinch the hose hard enough to close it down completely.
