Hi Javier,

Congrats to your new Diesel Westy. As you've already noticed with the original 1.6l engine it is not for people in a hurry. But camping in a Westy is not about being in a hurry anyway, right?

To see if your engine has decent performance try it on flat ground. Top speed in 4th gear should be about 65-70mph Top speed in 3rd: 50mph

Only do this for a short while. Driving the Diesel flat out for long periods is not a good idea. It will break the engine!

Around 60 mph is a suitable cruising speed on the flats.

Driving around 55mph you can expect 28mpg and 60-65 maybe 25-26mpg.

For the smoking:

Try adding some Stanadyne Performance formula. It's a cleaner/fuel improver made by a major Diesel injection pump builder. Don't buy any other brand (skip the stuff they sell at Walmart etc).

If that doesn't help take out the injectors and have them tested at a Diesel injection shop.

While the smoking persists try to avoid pushing the accelerator beyond the point where it smokes. It will only make more smoke, not more power, and it also wears on the engine. One of those small convex mirrors stuck on the passengers side rear view mirror lets you keep an eye on the exhaust pipe.

Get a Bentley manual for the Westie and learn to keep the Westy in tip top condition. You're the best person to do a good job on it. Most mechanics today don't know much about Diesels.
