Chris,

I am not at all an expert on such things, but I have been told by a couple normally reliable sources that if you machine out the center of a steel wheel to the extent that you remove the curled-out lip of metal, you will reduce the integrity of the wheel, and with side stresses the wheel will tend to "oil can" a bit and will eventually fail. I don't have any idea what the time frame is, but this has been a concern for me and the reason I didn't buy some passat (I think) wheels a while back.
