The air vents are actually scoops. At speed they help push cooling air into the engine compartment. Not as big an issue for H2O-boxers as for air-cooled. The big cooling fan on the AC models wants to be supplied with cooling air from as far away from the exhaust system as possible. Is also the good reason to make sure the engine air seal is intact, no?
