Hi Susan!
Good thinking by looking before you leap!
I would suggest four things to do:
1. Go to www.vanagon.com, and read the document on checking out a vanagon
prior to purchase;
2. Have any vehicle checked out by a VW specialist that you trust (not one
the owner suggests), and get a written report, with any deficiencies noted;
3. Test the camper equipment yourself - make sure the fridge works (on
propane, ac and dc), faucet in sink still pumps water, stoves both light
with blue flame (not orange). Pop the poptop, look at the canvas (and screen
window for holes) and upper bunk, look at the skylight for cracks;
4. Drive it at highway speeds for 90 min continuously, try to go up hills
etc. See if it performs to your level of satisfaction. See if it blows smoke
etc. Since it's a diesel, you may have greater expectations for performance
than the diesel can provide.
Then when you have more info to share, the question of value can be more
accurately determined by the listees - who collectively know more about
vanagons than any single person alive.
