Hi Leo, Bentley manual states clearly "pry off ball socket". If it's so hard I would remove this lever and do it on the bench. Long nose pliers might work better, slide them between socket and the lever and pry it realy hard. If you decide to remove the lever then cut a grove to the socket and spread it little more; try not to cut into the inner part.. BTW it's on the same principle as your tailgate lifters (less safety clips), look at them and try how hard they are to take off. Hope this helps a little.
