Nope, they come already 'done up' by the factory. VW uses an electron beam welding process (what do I know? I can't even solder!) to attach the synchro cone/hub to the mainshaft half of the gearset. The earlier '113' style 3rd and 4ths that came on the Type Is and Type IIs up to '72 1/2 or so, only had pressed on hubs. Most of the time thats OK but I have seen the press fit loosen under heavy loading. I should have a .JPEG or two that shows the difference on one of these Zip drive floppies laying about. I borrow the digital camera from my wife's work when I can and take as many 'photos' as possible. Keep telling myself that I'm doing it for the photo library on my forever delayed webpage! ;^)
