The guy was Sepp Maier, former renowned goal keeper of the German national soccer team (in the seventies? eighties? can't remember). And yes, the sheet metal in the pic he's showing is what was left over of his Syncro after he totalled it (totally drunk, if I remember correctly). Miraculously he himself got away, though badly injured (there was more to it than just his face hitting the windshield ...)
