The motors can go bad. When you say it would go out intermittently, do you mean that it would go from working perfectly to not at all, or did it ever move more slowly than normal? My experience has been that motors do not just stop working all of a sudden, but I'm sure it's possible.It's not too hard to take out the motor/regulator assembly, and you could see if the regulator looks all right (I've had that break too, but when this happens, you can usually hear the motor trying to do its thing). A new motor runs around $125-$150, but I've had great success with used motors.
