Of course you may. Since the air-cooled unit is self-contained, you can
remove the finiky radiator, rusting heater hoses, etc. You may need to
modify some of the tinware, but that is minor, comparatively.
Purists, in particular folks who like the wasserboxer (I don't), will think
it is a bad idea. They will proposes lots of fun reasons why you shouldn't,
and why it won't work. Heat, dependability, whatever. They think you can't
get good fast heat in a T-4, but they have never felt a decent T-4 heating
system in good operation. You can sit in shirt sleeves in our van, with 17
degree temps out, and still need to turn the heat down. No joke.
Bottom line, the type 4 motor is a hardy, strong, and dependably motor used
in a staggering variety of VWs and Porsches from 1968-1983. With an
auxiliary oil cooler, it is darn near bulletproof. If you haul a heavy
load, drive fast for long periods of time, and don't like the finicky head
gasket thing every 60-80k, pop a type 4 in there and forget about it.
