I hate to be a doubting Thomas, but I simply don't believe an '87 Vanagon
would go that fast.  By my calculation that would put RPM's at about 5700rpm
even a lowly 100mph.  100mph would be more like 6270rpm.  Different
transmissions ratios in Europe?  Maybe some sort of high revving 4
valve/cylinder DOHC wasserboxer that was never available here?
