Woody, et al,

To adjust the shifter properly, one has to make a tool and find a friend. Whatcha need is a piece of steel about 25mm (1") wide by about 100mm (4") long and about 4mm (1/8") thick. Make a saw cut with a hacksaw about half the length leaving a 'tang' exactly 19mm (3/4") wide (for vehicles up to chassis no. BH 25 137 155) or 22mm (7/8") wide for vehicles from BH 25 137 156). (In other words, cut the 25mm width down to either 19 or 22mm.)

Remove the spare and remove the cover over the bottom of the shifter. Place the trans in neutral. Loosen the clamp on the shift rod so that it can "easily" move. Note, the clamp is located just behind the middle rear crossmember.

Place the tool that you built between the shifter and the passenger side of the shifter housing and hold it there. Have that friend tighten the clamp and put it all back together.

You may have to try it a couple of times, but that's the 'right' way to do it.

If you have a Bentley, it's all on page 34.4.
