Byron,  If your mechanic is not that knowledgable about Waterboxer
Vanagons, then it is probably nothing more than air in the coolant system
still. If you air bleed the system properly through the bleed screw in
the radiator top with the front end of the van raised about 15" and as
the Bentley manual explains, then you will probably resolve the problem.
