By my calculation that would put RPM's at about 5700rpm even a lowly 100mph. 100mph would be more like 6270rpm. Different transmissions ratios in Europe? Maybe some sort of high revving 4 valve/cylinder DOHC wasserboxer that was never available here?

Mark, Its been my experience that many countrys were forunate enough to get a 5 speed transmission the the Vanagon. It may not be the 'freeway flyer' we think it might be but it could drop the RPM's down so that 100 MPH could be possible before the RPM limiter kicked in . I was told by a good source that the reason the US never got a five speed gas transmission was because of the EPA. Apparently, at certain RPMs in certain gears the emissions were unexeptable to meet US standards. So we were stuck with the old 4 speed with its higher gear ratio to keep the engine turning to keep emissions lower. -- -Jim DiGennaro ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LiMBO, The Late Model Bus Organization, international zzzzzzzzzzz_ |E[__] [__]|[_]\\ | _ LiMBO | _ || =-( )---------( )--= '84 Green Westfalia, 'The Turtle Van' James Digennaro, LiMBO's Editor and Web master. * 34 Summer St., Adams, MA 01220 ICQ# 5534528 LiMBO LINE: (413) 743-1814 * URL: http://www.bcn.net/~limbo/ 'Transporters By The Tunnel' - A fun camping event ' July 16th-18th ------------------------------------------------------------------------
