Methinks,,, someone in the past, probably not you or you would probably think of this, -reversed- your axles to get more life out of your CV joints. Now the wear pattern is only noticed in reverse. I did this exact thing on the wifes 87GL, many, many K miles ago, and now occasionally in reverse we get the bumping noise. This is my guess, FWIW.........
