I'm sure he doesn't own a vanagon. The life of oil is determined in part by how clean your engine is. Newer engines burn cleaner and therefore leave less carbon deposits on the cylinder and in the oil. Your vanagon, particularly if it has 100-200k miles, is far less efficient.

I'm sure that a 99 escort or whatever can go 7k on synthetic. Afterall they can go 7k on dino oil between oil changes.
