Richard, Fortunately, on my '84 you don't have to remove the calipers to replace the pads. I guess VW "improved" them with the '91's. When it comes to brakes, especially the marginal Vanagon brakes, I don't cut corners or cost anymore, it just isn't worth ANY risk. Go to the dealer and buy the bolts, even if they are $5 each and you have to beg or borrow the money. Do it right, do you think a top notch professional mechanic would re-use brake parts the manufacturer says to replace? If you are going to do your own maintenance, do it like a pro!
