Good idea. I would be interested in seeing the plans myself. One thing
though. Does it seem to you that, in the long run, this rig would put a
strain on the door hinges and cause some bending? Seems to me that as long
as the door is kept closed there would be no problem but Murphy lurks.

Subject: AC window unit bracket
Among other things, I installed the window unit bracket I got from
Houston VW Club member Steve Sandlin. Here are some quick pics:

Basically, the bracket consists of a piece that goes over the window
threshold with lots of padding to avoid marring the paint. A large
flat piece with triangular sides keeps the AC unit level and seals
the cool air in. Pieces of pipe insulation fill the gaps.
Steve shipped the flat piece completely intact so that I had to cut a
hole for my specific AC window unit. You cut an inverse "U" shaped
hole to fit the unit, preferably to be mounted where the little
accordion-type screen goes. I cut mine to fit into that groove so
that no further mounting was needed. The unit should tilt down
outside just a bit so that condensation doesn't drip back into the
van.
My unit has hanles on the outside and balances nicely on the window
threshold piece. A single bungee cord going from the luggage rack to
the wheelwell holds it in place. I put a second one, just in case.
Now, the window unit I got blows the air up as well as out. This
doesn't seem to work that well, so I have to figure out a way to get
more air going straight into the van, preferebly towards the back
where we'll be sleeping.
Steve doesn't appear to be interested in making more of these and
selling them because the shipping costs tend to make this an
expensive venture, but he says he'll gladly make up some plans for do-
it-yourselfers. Anyone at TbyT is welcome to stop by and have a
look. I'll bring the setup, even if it's not that hot.
