Having been buss-less for many years I picked up an '85 Westy with 41k miles (no s*#@). Driving a VW van with automatic, A/C, power steering, and power brakes is a little strange but I can get used to it. Had a scare the other day when the oil pressure light began to glow dimly about 100 miles into a 120 mile trip -- I was doing 65-70 mph with the A/C off. Remembering that the light meant a fried motor with my old '67 and '70 I pulled over right away fearing my trip was over. Checked the oil -- had plenty. Started the engine back up, the light went out, the engine ran fine with no obscene noises, and I finished the trip with no problems. Back home (another 120 miles later) I changed the oil and filter (20-50 Castrol and a Bosch filter) and things seem cool. Next change I plan on switching to a synthetic oil, a better filter (Mann/Mahle?) and checking the pressure relief valve. In the near future I plan to add VDO oil pressure and temperature guages. Back when I had the '67 I added a high capacity oil pump and a remote cooler -- does anybody make this sort of stuff specifically for the 1.9L?
