My alternator has been squealing for some time and I thought before I head out for TbyT, I'd pop the new one in that I got from the Bus Depot. This is an '87 Digifant, BTW. I took out the old one and am looking at the new one, but the connections do not appear to be the same. On the old one, there is one large connection that the red wires and a smaller one right next to it. Actually, I took some digipics; these came out the clearest: http://www.enter.net/~bloss/vw/alt1.jpg http://www.enter.net/~bloss/vw/alt2.jpg http://www.enter.net/~bloss/vw/alt3.jpg The old one is on the left; the new one on the right. At about 10 o'clock on the old one, you can see the big connection closer to 10 o'clock and the smaller at 9, both screw terminals (13mm on the big one, 8mm on the small one). On the new one, the smaller connection isn't there. There is a bolt sticking out slightly from the inside (not enough to attach anything). On the small connection was a 2.2microFarad capacitor, part #0 310 000 059; you can see it at about 8 o'clock in <http://www.enter.net/~bloss/vw/alt3.jpg>. That would have no place to go on the new one. There is an additional push on connector; is this the replacement? There's an additional capacitor on the old one...do I have to move that over? Does it perhaps sound like I got the wrong alternator? Maybe on a newer model the capacitors are internal? But then where does the blue wire go?
