I couldn't be more proud than to have achieved all possible failures!
Just to complete the picture:
  - My LED panel was also bad. (David's fixing it for me.)
  - The replacement sender I ordered from EuroAmerican arrived
    via UPS yesterday - broken cleanly in two.  The box was bent
    at about 30 degrees right across the "FRAGILE - GLASS -
    HANDLE WITH CARE" label.  (EuroAmerican's going to replace
    it and charge UPS.)

Sometimes I wonder if it would be easier to just open the tank
hatch once in a while and LOOK to see how much water was left...

Once all the new bits get here over the next few days, though,
all should be back to being as it should be.  My thanks to David
for all the help, and for figuring out and publishing the workings
of the formerly mysterious water level meter.
