Stomp harder on the brake! The Vanagon has a very low ratio of force amplification in the power brakes - only about 2 to 1 if I remember right.

Other possible problems: 1/ Inside piston of the brake calipers often start sticking before outside. Flex in the rotor makes it looks as if the brakes still work, while they are only about 1/2 as effective.

2/ Anti-rattle plate missing. This one controls the force distribution on the pad. Worst consequences if missing on ATE/Teve's style calipers with the notched pistons. Mechanics don't understand what these are for and hence forget to put them back.

3/ Rear brake adjusters not working. These easily rust.
