what is the difference between the Golf/Jetta (diesel or gas?) and the Vanagon diesel waterpump? Does the vanagon version have a high flow rate?

No, different hub, different pulley and belt arrangement. Belt slips because of shallow contact angle when in a vanagon application => quick overheat and often a blown head gasket and warped head.
