Subject: Dash control lights question
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

My 89 Westy was recently involved in a hit-and-run accident while parked that caused a lot of front end damage. In my first night time trip after getting it back from the body shop, I noticed several of the dash controls were not illuminated and I honestly can't recall if they were always that way or if this is a new item I need to point out to the body shop. My radio was also replaced with one that is not lighted up as well as the previous one. It could very well be that this "extra darkness" that I seem to perceive now is solely a result of my new dimly-lighted radio. If you have an 89 or similar late model vanagon I'd appreciate it if you would let me know if the following controls are illuminated on your vanagon:

1. 4 vent/heater slider controls - was there some lighting behind these? Mine's completely dark.

2. Front fan control switch on right side of the 4 vent/heater slider controls - this control is not illuminated on my van, but the rear heater fan control on the left side of the slider controls is.

3. Two round A/C control nobs to the left of the cigarette lighter (fan control, A/C on/off temp control) - was there some lighting behind these? Mine's completely dark.

4. Headlight on/off switch and dash panel dimmer dial on left of dash. Mine's completely dark when the headlights are on.

It seemed strange to me that the controls I mentioned above were not lighted at all and I honestly don't remember if they were always that way or not. Especially when the left rear fan control is lighted and the right front fan control is not.

The dimmer switch under the headlight switch is turned to maximum brightness, so that's not the problem (if there is even one). The controls that are lighted are fine, but something seems funny to me now since there are several controls that aren't lighted up. It may have always been that way but I don't remember. I don't specifically remember them as being lighted up, but I also don't remember them being dark as well. Can anyone "shed some light" on this?

Thanks,

Steve

89 Westy
