Susan, your diesel van is a good candidate for an engine swap that will
really give it a boot in the butt! There's lots of info available on this
list and others sites that can give you some direction.

Hi...just returned from the coast with "Harold" my new to me 83 diesel....
now I admit before I bought him you folks out there warned me that it would
be slow going....but geeze this was a safety hazard!!!!  I had my "hazardous
blinkers" on because I was going so slow up mediocre grades that I literally
slowed to 20 miles per hour...talk about road rage around me!!!  ( I can
hear all the I told you so's now...)  two or three questions....is it normal
to go THAT slow????  #2 will dropping one of those Rabbit engines make a big
difference????  #3 About how much would that cost...and does anyone want the
job???? Really I love my Bus...but now I'm chicken to go anywhere with a
hill!!!!  Suffering in Sutherlin Susan!!!
