Alan,

On my '86 Syncro there is a latch at the rear of the sliding door that catches and holds the door open. The latch is mounted on the body with two big phillips head screws which are just barely accessible from the outside - a BIG driver helps here.

When this latch becomes loose, it stops working. Try tightening up the screws.
