Actually, Sachs specifically states in their literature that their stock 228mm clutch is for both Vanagon 2WD *and* Syncro. I am looking right at their book as I write this. The "heavy duty" one to which you refer may in fact simply be another brand, perhaps a Luk (also good quality). I'm sure I can get it too if anyone were interested, although so far I've never had a request for one. Sachs did at one time specify a different clutch for '90-91 Vanagons (both 2WD or Syncro), but now supercedes both to a single model for all Vanagons. Regarding clutch chatter, this is most often caused by factors other than the clutch, but made more noticable by the installation of a new clutch. It kind of like the person who fixes a loud muffler and suddenly discovers a valve tap he never heard before. You should resurface your flywheel and check/replace your motor mounts when doing a clutch job to prevent chatter. See the archives, the clutch chatter issue has been covered numerous times.
